The Sankao coffee table, named after the Japanese term for "three faces," stands as a bold and elegant addition to any living space. Vidiella drew inspiration from nature, specifically the evolution of species and cell growth, to create a design that adapts to its environment and function. The table's unique properties are rooted in its evolutionary concept of pure geometries, which develop like a living organism. This design philosophy is brought to life using solid wood, a material chosen for its unique DNA and footprints.
The creation of the Sankao coffee table is a blend of technology and craftsmanship. Iroko solid wood planks are three-dimensionally machined using a 5-axis CNC milling router, following a 3D drawing. Artisans then assemble the pieces, giving the table its final shape. The design is eco-friendly, with each piece crafted from hand-selected hardwood sourced from certified, sustainable sources.
With dimensions of 1200mm in width, 1200mm in depth, and 420mm in height, the Sankao coffee table is a substantial piece. Its interaction with observers is natural and instinctive, thanks to its curved lines and surfaces. The table's attractive shape and the warmth of the material invite users to approach, touch, and sit next to it.
The Sankao project began in June 2018 in Madrid and concluded in September of the same year. It has since won several awards, including the Gold Winner Muse Design Awards 2020, the Golden Award Novum Design Award 2020, and an Honorable Mention at the European Product Design Award, ePDA 2020. It was also exhibited at the Paris Design Week 2020: Maison & Objet Digital Fair.
Despite the technical challenges posed by the table's complex geometry, Vidiella and his team managed to overcome them, particularly in realizing the three main gaps where books are housed. The result is a unique piece of furniture that combines the highest manufacturing technology with traditional craftsmanship, available in different solid wood types such as iroko, oak, or ash.
With its unique design and sustainable approach, the Sankao coffee table is a testament to Pablo Vidiella's commitment to creating innovative, eco-friendly designs. It's not just a piece of furniture, but a statement of harmony between nature and innovation.
